Beyond the Classroom - Overview

Cooloola Christian College runs a support program called ‘Beyond the Classroom' as part of a wider effort to support families and encourage students by providing significant learning experiences outside the normal classroom curriculum.

 These experiences:

  • help students achieve their God-given potential;
  • challenge them beyond their normal comfort zone;
  • develop life skills through experience-based learning;
  • nurture faith in God and provide opportunities for Christian service.

As the name suggests, 'Beyond the Classroom' (BTC) focuses on activities that take place outside normal classroom structure or routine.  Students from Prep through to Year 12 participate in a range of whole class activities or individualised programs designed to target particular needs.

On-Site Activities

Lunch time activities

Since its inception BTC has aimed to provide purposeful activities for students during lunch times.  Our Senior School students have been involved in facilitation of sporting, social and craft activities for our Primary and Middle School students and we expect this to continue this year.

Designer support programs

Our BTC staff are available to design and implement programs for classes to meet specific needs.  Previous programs have focused on:

  • bullying
  • teaching etiquette
  • developing confidence
  • conflict resolution
  • goal setting

Off-Site Activities

Camps

Our camping program has been the foundation of BTC and Outdoor Education for many years.  Students from Year 2 through to Senior School participate in overnight and multi-day camps ranging from sleeping in the tunnel at Underwater World to a gruelling 4 day leadership training program for Year 11 at Emu Gully near Toowoomba.  All our camps focus on developing social skills, leadership, teamwork and initiative.

Duke of Edinburgh Award

Since the introduction of the Duke of Edinburgh Award in 2006, many students have commenced their Bridge, Bronze and Silver awards.  A number of these students have been recognised at award presentations and moved on to the next level.  Look out for the next Duke of Edinburgh camp and keep working on your awards as you participate in skill development, community service and an adventurous journey that takes you beyond the ‘every day’.

Falls Creek Ski Trip

For students wanting to get out and enjoy life to the maximum with Christian friends then the BTC Ski Trips are a perfect option.  Our biennial trips (subject to numbers) to the Victorian snow fields are extremely popular with our Senior School students.  With 5 days of fun in the snow and relaxation beside the fireplace chatting with friends, this trip provides a wonderful September holiday option.

Solomon Islands Ministry

Since 2006 our school has been working in the Western Province of the Solomon Islands, providing resources, teaching and fellowship. Student and staff teams have been involved in many projects including establishing the first Christian radio station in the west, rebuilding our sister school after the 2007 earthquake, and dental hygiene/reading glasses clinics. We are also proud to call Maravari Primary our sister school and enjoy the ongoing mutual benefit that comes from this rich connection.

There are so many simple ways that each of us can seek to serve one another each day. We don’t have to go to a “mission field” or sign up to a fundraising event, we just need to open our eyes to the needs around and reach out our hand. Service is the outward expression of Jesus command, “love one another as I have loved you”.
